As users, we needed time to figure out the appropriate uses for video and the companies hoping to dominate the form needed to lower the barriers to acceptance, to make it as quick and easy as possible for curious experimenters to get started, so that video comments could gain momentum, visibility and, eventually, mainstream acceptance.
Unfortunately, Seesmic's implementation was particularly bad, pushing too hard to get users to sign up to Seesmic and all but hiding the option to post anonymously. Loic was so desperate to build up short-term numbers to reassure his nervous investors that he missed the opportunity to make video commenting as easy as simply pushing a button, instead forcing users to jump through the hoops of yet another registration process, enough to persuade most already shy users not to bother.
What was needed, for the idea to take off, was for the companies with an interest in video commenting to take a long-term view, to realize that they had to establish the concept, the habit of video commenting BEFORE they could start trying to cash in or adding to their dubious and essentially meaningless user numbers.
As a result, now, the common wisdom is that video commenting was simply a bad idea but, in fact, it was just bad luck that the companies involved were sloppy, lacked vision and desperate to placate their investors.
It is a pity but I am sure that, at some point, someone with an understanding of user psychology will give the concept another shot and get it right.
It was always going to be difficult to coax people into leaving video comments and, the more hoops you make people jump through in order to leave one, the higher the percentage of people who will leave the process unfinished.
I agree that it will catch on again that won't be Seesmic or Viddler, it will someone who grasps the need to present with one big red button that you press to record, a stop button that appears while you record and a Publish button that appears after you press stop - no registration, no login, absolutely no distractions. Insanely simple.
My personal hope is that it would be ad supported but with the option for me, as site owner, to pay for an ad-free version, I would definitely pay for that.
Automatic transcripts (by some AI, probably doable nowadays) would also be nice.
Letting the blog owner turn on and off video embeds would be a nice feature.

You can actually just click on the FBC button to make it happen.
Guess no one at techcrunch saw the need to disable some of the plugins. Try rolling over a photo - you get the dorpdown from disqus; the drag to share from meebo (the toolbar at the bottom of the screen) and the snapshots screen overlay.
Missing avatars is also a result of a funky server configuration which will be fixed in a few moments as well.
[edit] Fixed now.
(Ignore me, just testing.)
BTW, I'm using IntenseDebate on my other Blogger blogs. It's cool.
www.cocomment.com never really took off. They were way ahead of the game but dropped the ball.
And firefox has not updated for several minutes (I refreshed Internet Explorer) my 'other' comment was pasted nine minutes ago - yet still shows in here as one minute ago - and no sign of the three new comments that have shown up yet.
It seems that the broken images are the ones that are comign from facebook.
I think this is best shown in the way we've built out our products.
I've been an early adopter to IntenseDebate and I'm disappointed with the slow pace of innovation and improving of the service. It's still buggy as hell. I'm growing tired of waiting for Automattic to put some work on it.
Has the need for add-ins such as the BackType Connect WordPress plugin and Chat Catcher fallen away with the latest version of DISQUS?

I'm a fan of instant interaction, and faster iteration. I also respect longer thinking and getting back to tough issues later. I think both types of interactions can be accomadated by echo and disqus. I would prefer to have an open reliable comment protocol so that if jskit or disqus become liquid, I keep all the linking, and information arrangement.
I feel like I've lost a lot of that with friendfeeds purchase. And the threat of URL shorteners going under doesn't increase my confidence.

One, how do I enable the "Real-time updating is paused. (Resume)" option?
Two, how do I change the color of the textarea (where you write your comment)? In version 2, you use the supplied JS to target the iframe that holds the textarea. But in version 3 this no longer seems to work. In version 3, the inputs are now outside the iframe so they can be targeted with simple css. But still, my textarea remains white! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Because my site is dark grey, and I cannot proceed and implement untill I can match the colors (not bright white!). Thanks!
You can use the same JS to target the iframe the same way. The new theme treats this a bit differently and we will update to use the same behavior.

OK, so "how" do I use the same JS to target the textarea? You failed to mention that. And I have been emailing support (Giannii) for two weeks now, but have still not recieved the answer/solution. Eagerly awaiting...
# disqus_iframe_css
Description: Disqus uses an iframe to do all posting, including commenting and authentication. This parameter allows the site to define an external stylesheet to use within the iframe.
Note: This is only applicable for the Classic A and Classic B themes.
To recap, I just want the ability to change the color of the textarea (aka, where comments are input). My site is not white, therefore I do not want a white comment area. Thanks for your time!
