TechCrunch: Disqus Forks Into Two Products, Launches Revamped Real-Time Comment System

  • Andrew Warner · 3 months ago
Looks like they finally killed the Seesmic integration too. Are video comments dead forever?
  • jasoncartwright · 3 months ago
    Let's hope so. Stupid fad.
  • donnacha | WordSkill · 3 months ago
I disagree, video commenting has huge potential, not as a replacement for text comments but as good way to add an entirely different level of content to discussions - nobody wants to listen to some boring guy spend three minutes rambling on, rather than quickly scanning down a thread of text comments, but there are situations in which video allows you to quickly show something relevant to the discussion or to indisputably prove that you are who you say you are, etc.

As users, we needed time to figure out the appropriate uses for video and the companies hoping to dominate the form needed to lower the barriers to acceptance, to make it as quick and easy as possible for curious experimenters to get started, so that video comments could gain momentum, visibility and, eventually, mainstream acceptance.

Unfortunately, Seesmic's implementation was particularly bad, pushing too hard to get users to sign up to Seesmic and all but hiding the option to post anonymously. Loic was so desperate to build up short-term numbers to reassure his nervous investors that he missed the opportunity to make video commenting as easy as simply pushing a button, instead forcing users to jump through the hoops of yet another registration process, enough to persuade most already shy users not to bother.

What was needed, for the idea to take off, was for the companies with an interest in video commenting to take a long-term view, to realize that they had to establish the concept, the habit of video commenting BEFORE they could start trying to cash in or adding to their dubious and essentially meaningless user numbers.

As a result, now, the common wisdom is that video commenting was simply a bad idea but, in fact, it was just bad luck that the companies involved were sloppy, lacked vision and desperate to placate their investors.

It is a pity but I am sure that, at some point, someone with an understanding of user psychology will give the concept another shot and get it right.
  • Giannii · 3 months ago
Personally, I think people are still very timid still when it comes to video. Just wait till more people have video on their phones etc. I believe it will catch on again over the next couple years, It just needs time.
  • donnacha | WordSkill · 3 months ago
Yes, exactly, the main companies pushing video commenting failed to account for the natural timidity of users facing an unfamiliar concept.

It was always going to be difficult to coax people into leaving video comments and, the more hoops you make people jump through in order to leave one, the higher the percentage of people who will leave the process unfinished.

I agree that it will catch on again that won't be Seesmic or Viddler, it will someone who grasps the need to present with one big red button that you press to record, a stop button that appears while you record and a Publish button that appears after you press stop - no registration, no login, absolutely no distractions. Insanely simple.

My personal hope is that it would be ad supported but with the option for me, as site owner, to pay for an ad-free version, I would definitely pay for that.
  • Branstrom · 3 months ago
Yes! That's exactly the UI it should have. Dead simple.

Automatic transcripts (by some AI, probably doable nowadays) would also be nice.
  • Ben Atlas · 3 months ago
Video makes sense if you reply to a video, like a real live conversation. And you see how it is used and makes sense on YouTube. But if a writer appeals in a written format, it makes better sense to reply in the same medium. People feel this intuitively.
  • mikeflynn · 3 months ago
I didn't think video comments are all bad, it just replies to some conversations more than others.

Letting the blog owner turn on and off video embeds would be a nice feature.

I'd like to log in via my Facebook account, but instead of being able to click on it, all I can do is drag it to make my comment somewhere else? Am I the only one who is finding this confusing?
  • Daniel Ha · 3 months ago
That's actually not part of Disqus, but something added by the meebo widget on this site.

You can actually just click on the FBC button to make it happen.
  • ThatAdamGuy · 3 months ago
Ah, thanks! It looks fine now (even on a different browser where I'm not already logged into Disqus); I see the relevant icons for signing in. Thanks for clearing up the confusion!
  • Rob · 3 months ago
This looks much better integrated into the site then the Echo Widget.
  • Riaz Kanani · 3 months ago
great stuff.. loving the real time stuff and the speed of the system.

Guess no one at techcrunch saw the need to disable some of the plugins. Try rolling over a photo - you get the dorpdown from disqus; the drag to share from meebo (the toolbar at the bottom of the screen) and the snapshots screen overlay.

  • Daniel Ha · 3 months ago
Quick note about the real-time. There was some unnecessary time delay between servers while calculating the time calculations -- should be fixed in a few moments.

Missing avatars is also a result of a funky server configuration which will be fixed in a few moments as well.

    [edit] Fixed now.
  • Devin · 3 months ago

I have been anticipating the launch of Discus V3 for a while. I think the back-end design is a little convoluted now. In terms of the updated commenting design, why are the sharing options hidden by default? I thought for a second there the share via twitter box was gone.

I have integrated Disqus into many sites but never got the hang of using it as a user (beyond leaving the occasional comment here and there of course). Empowering commenters seems to be as good a thing as empowering site owners was and I can't wait to try it out.
  • iMeow · 3 months ago
Very nice! I hope TC will think about using Disqus on all there posts.
  • Rob_DeMone · 3 months ago
The UI is greatly improved, and the 'collapsing' feature is handy. Great stuff...
  • Stephen Kelly · 3 months ago
I think that they have a way to go with this version yet. It has broken in IE within missing images, there are different commenst on IE than here in Firefox the times about how many minutes ago - dont seem correct (I just refreshed page and they stayed the same).

And firefox has not updated for several minutes (I refreshed Internet Explorer) my 'other' comment was pasted nine minutes ago - yet still shows in here as one minute ago - and no sign of the three new comments that have shown up yet.

It seems that the broken images are the ones that are comign from facebook.

Nick - updates are queued up at the top. Just click "Show" to have new comments appear on the page.
  • Andrew Warner · 3 months ago
I love that it autoposts without needing to refresh the page. But I don't see any confirmation that my comment was posted. Do you? I wonder if that will confuse users.
  • Andru Edwards · 3 months ago
When they release an officially-supported ExpressionEngine plugin, I will switch in a second. Until then, meh.

I'm a moderator on a Web site and I like a lot of the new features but the ability to let commenters disassociate themselves with a comment they left is a terrible idea. I wouldn't mind letting commenters delete their own comments but having it labeled anonymous defeats the purpose of having them sign in to begin with - plus, it's an added thing for us mods to have to change after the fact!
  • Daniel Ha · 3 months ago
Angela, all options are controllable by moderators of sites.
  • DotComGuy · 3 months ago

OMG, this is awesome. I am really happy to be using DISQUS on my blogs. Kudos to the DISQUS team.
  • dougjoe · 3 months ago
My challenge with Disqus is that I feel like most sites don't want to put their communities in the hands of a 3rd party aggregator who has the ultimate mission of moving those folks to Disqus. Just seems like a big risk for any site that takes community seriously to outsource this functionality, even if their features are more robust. I'd be curious to see how much inflow Disqus generates versus just distracting folks out of your community to somewhere else. Hmm.
  • Daniel Ha · 3 months ago
That's a good point and we've addressed this concern since Disqus became available. Foremost, Disqus Comments is a service for publishers. Short answer is that we only want to power and provide tools to build your community, not create one for ourselves.

I think this is best shown in the way we've built out our products.

  • hypermark · 3 months ago
Is there anyway to integrate Disqus into an EXISTING TypePad powered site? My site is a Classic Template, and in the past there was no way to integrate without a lot of heavy lifting. Otherwise, would use in a heartbeat over TP's fairly weak commenting system.

Does DISQUS have two-way sync to and from my wordpress database, like IntenseDebate? If so, I will seriously consider switching comment system on my blog.

I've been an early adopter to IntenseDebate and I'm disappointed with the slow pace of innovation and improving of the service. It's still buggy as hell. I'm growing tired of waiting for Automattic to put some work on it.
  • Daniel Ha · 3 months ago
Our WordPress plugin also syncs with your WP database as well as uses our API for SEO-compatbility.
  • Maskil · 1 month ago
Did I understand your response correctly? Does DISQUS keep the WordPress comments intact on your database, as well as synching the comments to its own database? (That’s something I’ve always liked about JS-Kit/Echo, and why I’ve resisted moving to another commenting system.)

Has the need for add-ins such as the BackType Connect WordPress plugin and Chat Catcher fallen away with the latest version of DISQUS?
  • Defcon5 · 3 months ago
I've used Disqus on our site for awhile now, and this appears to be a good change. However the separation of the two services might confuse new users. Then again, maybe I have used it too long to see the benefit of the separation.

It's easy to become enamored with new real time communication methods. We are slowly turning our virtual homes and businesses into chat rooms. The fundamental difference between real time streams and instant messaging is topical/site based sorting and later search utility.

I'm a fan of instant interaction, and faster iteration. I also respect longer thinking and getting back to tough issues later. I think both types of interactions can be accomadated by echo and disqus. I would prefer to have an open reliable comment protocol so that if jskit or disqus become liquid, I keep all the linking, and information arrangement.

I feel like I've lost a lot of that with friendfeeds purchase. And the threat of URL shorteners going under doesn't increase my confidence.
  • Moshe Ravid · 3 months ago
Nice. looks much better than Echo.
  • chrisnadeau · 3 months ago
If you are a Disqus user already, will your blog be automatically updated? Or do you have to do something to make this work? I checked my blog and noticed it is still the older version.

  • EricWatson · 2 months ago
I love Disqus! I've tried both (disqus and echo) and I prefer Disqus. Although I have two questions that beg to be answered...

One, how do I enable the "Real-time updating is paused. (Resume)" option?

Two, how do I change the color of the textarea (where you write your comment)? In version 2, you use the supplied JS to target the iframe that holds the textarea. But in version 3 this no longer seems to work. In version 3, the inputs are now outside the iframe so they can be targeted with simple css. But still, my textarea remains white! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Because my site is dark grey, and I cannot proceed and implement untill I can match the colors (not bright white!). Thanks!
  • EricWatson · 2 months ago
I can't seem to get the Disqus guys to answer any questions though...?
  • Daniel Ha · 2 months ago
    Eric,

You can use the same JS to target the iframe the same way. The new theme treats this a bit differently and we will update to use the same behavior.

If you need further help, contact us here: http://disqus.com/help/
  • EricWatson · 2 months ago
The new "Profile" setup is real nice!

OK, so "how" do I use the same JS to target the textarea? You failed to mention that. And I have been emailing support (Giannii) for two weeks now, but have still not recieved the answer/solution. Eagerly awaiting...
  • EricWatson · 2 months ago
And here is the info I found on it...

    # disqus_iframe_css

Description: Disqus uses an iframe to do all posting, including commenting and authentication. This parameter allows the site to define an external stylesheet to use within the iframe.

Note: This is only applicable for the Classic A and Classic B themes.
  • Giannii · 2 months ago
Glad you got it working and sorry for the delay in support, we've recently changed our support tools and I've been a tad bit behind. If you need anything else do not hesitate to contact us at http://disqus.com/help
  • EricWatson · 2 months ago
Hi Giannii, thanks for the reply, but no, I still have not got it working. I emailed help/support again this morning.

To recap, I just want the ability to change the color of the textarea (aka, where comments are input). My site is not white, therefore I do not want a white comment area. Thanks for your time!
